Can AI Be My New Therapist?

We get this question more and more lately, often whispered with a mix of curiosity and shame:

“Can I just talk to AI instead of a therapist?”

Short answer?
Sure. Sometimes. For some things.
But also… not really. Not yet. Not fully. And definitely not when it matters most.

Let’s unpack this with care—because we’re not anti-technology. In fact, we believe that the future of mental health will absolutely involve artificial intelligence. But we also believe there’s a risk in confusing convenience with connection.

And we’re in the business of connection.

What AI Can Offer:

Let’s give credit where it’s due. AI is an impressive tool. It can:

  • Mirror back your thoughts in organized ways

  • Provide calming scripts or guided breathing

  • Summarize patterns in what you’ve journaled

  • Suggest coping strategies or reframes

  • Be “there” when no one else is awake

If you’re in crisis or isolated or don’t know where to start, AI can be a low-barrier, judgment-free space to begin.

But Here’s the Core Issue:

AI doesn’t have a nervous system. You do.
And healing—real, relational, transformative healing—happens between nervous systems.

AI doesn’t flinch when you cry.
It doesn’t notice the way your voice changes when you mention your father.
It doesn’t sit with you in the silence after you share something sacred.
It can’t co-regulate, attune, or metabolize pain with you.

You can tell a machine your secrets. But only a human can witness them.

What We’re Afraid to Say

Sometimes people turn to AI because it feels safer than a human. No awkward silences. No fear of judgment. No “how does that make you feel?”

And that makes so much sense—especially for neurodivergent folks, trauma survivors, or those let down by bad therapy. If you’ve been hurt by people, AI feels predictable.

But therapy isn’t about perfect safety. It’s about safe-enough risk. It’s about practicing being human in front of another human. That’s what rewires your brain. That’s what opens the door to deeper healing.

Our Honest Take

Use AI. Let it help you journal. Let it help you name feelings. Let it sit with you in hard moments.

But don’t let it replace what you deserve:

  • A real relationship

  • A space that grows with you

  • A therapist who remembers your dog’s name and your favorite metaphor

  • A witness who sees your wholeness even in your unraveling

Because you’re not a system to be optimized.
You’re a person to be known.
